　　讲述普策利新闻奖得主、美国无身份移民、菲律宾人侯赛·安东尼奥·瓦格斯(Jose Antonio Vargas) 参与推动美国移民政策改革并且争取自己合法身份的过程。侯赛12岁时被移民美国的祖父雇人偷渡至美，他一直不知道自己是非法移民，直到16岁时独自去办理驾照时，才被告知自己持有的绿卡是假证。被惶恐包围的侯赛慢慢开始寻求高中老师和校长的帮助，同时发现了自己对新闻工作的热爱，开始在校报发表新闻。大学毕业后，侯赛靠着各种方式满混过关地获得美国各大报刊的实习工作机会，包括旧金山纪事报、纽约客、华盛顿邮报等等。在参与推动移民政策改革运动中，他带领的团体登上了时代周刊的封面，并成功促使奥巴马总统宣布一项允许无证移民申请工作许可的政令。在此过程中，他也与自己仍在菲律宾的20年未见面的母亲视频通话，开始修补他们因为当年的移民问题而疏远的关系。
